About my work
I discovered art when I was just a kid - before I knew what art was, and eventually ended up studying Illustration and Animation at uni. After several years of being on-again/off-again, I've taken a serious dive back into my art, encouraged by the isolation of a pandemic. For a long stretch, I worked full-time as a PM in the consumer goods industry while making art at odd hours of the day. Then in December of 2023, I lost my full-time gig. It happened during an extremely rocky time in my life and I took it as a sign to focus solely on art.
I've always found it hard to articulate what my 'style' is; I'm not married to a specific medium or subject matter. Yet when I take a step back I see a common thread. I paint and sculpt my emotions - feelings of fear, wonder, and longing.
Born in Los Angeles to Chinese immigrants, I have lived in the Bay Area since I was two and am currently based in Oakland, California. My work has been featured at the de Young and SFMOMA museum stores in San Francisco, under the name TIMMY MAYS.
